Abstract

<p><strong>Background and objective:</strong> HIV/AIDS still remains a major public health problem all over the world Blood borne diseases impose heavy burdens on national economies and individual families due to costs arising from acute and chronic morbidity and mortality. Razor sharing and shaving in barber shops has been too identified as a key risk factor for HIV infection. The aim of this study was to detect the presence of HIV in different barber shops tools in Khartoum Sudan.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>This was descriptive, cross-sectional study carried out in East Nile, locality, Khartoum. During January to February 2016. The study included different barbers-shop. Barbers were asked using questionaire about their level of education, basic knowledge about modes of transmission of HIV, sterilization of equipment and used brushes after shaving, For detection of human immunodeficiency virus using Rapid Diagnostic Test after detect traces of blood by using Fecal Occult Blood technique. Generated data was analyzed by using SPSS program.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> Out of the total 130 tools wash specimens, 22 (16.9%) were containing blood while seroprevalence of HIV was 2(1.5%).</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Practice in barbers-shops may lead to spread of HIV between clients. The public media should spend more efforts on spreading information and knowledge about HIV. Local authorities should distribute leaflets with detailed information on proper modes of sterilization of equipment.</p>
